Random Thoughts

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

I get a lot of random thoughts that float through my head. I realize that many of these things are the things people put on their Twitter accounts. However, to this day Twitter annoys me. I have a hard time wanting to get on. I don’t know why everyone would want to read little snippets of thousands of other peoples thoughts. I was told it was an excellent way to advertise myself as a writer and to get more traffic to my articles and blogs. I still can’t do it.

Anyway. Here are a few random thoughts for this morning:

1. My little boy is growing up. I know that I don’t have to really feel this for quite some time. He is now three and a half and while he has gotten bigger and learned so much, the realization that he is growing up actually hit me for a completely different reason. He has two blankets, a puppy, and a dragon that he sleeps with each night. For the longest time everything had to get out of bed with him in the morning. For the past two weeks it doesn’t. If he gets cold he will go get a blanket and every now and again he will grab either puppy or dragon (neither one has a real name) to play with. But for the most part, they stay in his bed until he needs them.

2. Today I would like a cup of hot chocolate. I haven’t bought hot chocolate for the house since moving down to Texas. The need for something hot to drink just isn’t there like it was when we lived in Michigan and Wisconsin. After all, coming in from a thirty degree day is a lot easier than the cold that happens up there. So, we have cocoa and I could make myself some hot chocolate and it would be good, it just sounds like too much work. I know, I know, I shouldn’t be that lazy, but right now putting a coffee mug in the microwave and stirring in a pre mixed and pre measured amount of powder sounds loads easier.

3. It takes us a number of years to master the concept of sharing. Marcus is a fantastic big brother. He helps me, he checks on his sister, he worries about her falling off the couch (he will put his hand up and let her know she is getting to the edge even though both Mommy and Daddy are sitting there), and so on. However, she has entered the stage where she likes playing with toys (a lot) and she is moving around (a lot). For the life of him he doesn’t want to let her play with anything! Her toys are very interesting. All the toys are his. The baby toys are amazingly interesting. Then if it isn’t a toy he is worried it will hurt her. So, pretty much he takes anything that she wants away from her.

Well…that’s it for my random thoughts. Parenthood clouds the thoughts as you can see. I am excited and pleased to watch them grow. It also thrills me that they are learning so much. Anyway…it’s time to feed Vanessa breakfast. Till next time!

It Is Official

Friday, January 29th, 2010

While some members of the family have been anxiously awaiting Vanessa learning to crawl, her mom wasn’t too excited. I just wasn’t quite ready for all the problems that happens with a newly mobile child. Well, Vanessa has been doing better and better scootching around the room. This has made it so that we have to make sure that all of Marcus’ little toys are picked up from under the couch. Vanessa is able to find things that are way under there (I didn’t even realize her arms were that long!). Well, today I will say that it is official. While she doesn’t stay up on her knees long, she is getting both of them under her and moving forward a bit before going back to her belly. This of course will lead to her moving much faster and it probably won’t be long before the living room won’t contain her!

Marcus learned to crawl in some weird ways. He actually didn’t crawl at eight months. Instead he learned the under the wire crawl you see in movies and boot camp ideals. He knees would be on either side of him like a little lizard and he would get to moving at scary fast speeds. He tried crawling a few times and decided his way was faster. He was ten or eleven months old before he crawled in a normal manner!

Well, I certainly knew this day was coming and at eight months she is on target rather than early…

But time does fly so fast and with it comes so many changes…

The News is In

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

It is apparent that Marcus thinks he looks like Caleb. This morning he was going through the family newsletter naming the people iin the pictures. I admit that this isn’t an easy task because they are small, black and white, and aren’t the clearest of pictures. He came to a picture of Vanessa and proudly said, “That’s Nessa!”. Then when I pointed at the picture of him near by he said, “Caleb”. I corrected him and moved on to the next page. There was a picture of him holding Vanessa. When asked who they were he pointed at the baby and once again announced that it was Nessa. Next he pointed at himself and quickly announced that it was Caleb.

So, while this issue isn’t one that happens often, it is clear that there is a strong family resemblence. No doubt about it that Marcus looks like a Karth!

The other bit of news is that sadest news I have yet! Vanessa is gearing up to say her first word. Right now her sounds include “babababa” and “lalalala”, but what concerns me the most is that she is also saying “dadada”. While she hasn’t realized that it sounds like a word, it won’t be long. For the life of me, I can’t get her to say anything that sounds like “mama”! I thought we had a deal! Marcus said, “dada” first so Vanessa was supposed to say Mama first! Well…so much for my plans. :-{

How I (Danelle) Was Introduced To Homeschooling

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

Looking back I can see that my education started in the home. I was the oldest children and my mom worked hard to teach me a lot before my brothers were born. I was an early reader, loved learning, and loved books. I begged my mom to start school once I learned about it and at four years old I was sent to preschool at the local private school. I went twice a week and still remember my teacher. Kindergarten was even better because instead of going on Tuesdays and Thursdays I got to go Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Things changed dramatically for me in first grade.

Part way through the year my mom was no longer able to afford the private school and I was transfered to a public school. There the class was bigger and they did things differently. I felt loss and remember moving from loving to learn and go to school to hating it. The next two and a half years I struggled to make it through. We moved away in third grade and I was to start the following year in a new school. Because of this my mom held me back and I did third grade over again.

This second round of third grade was amazing and I loved it. Mrs. Veenstra made class a challenge and I was with several very smart students. We raced to see who could complete the math book first, we challenged each other in reading (I was aided by a friend on the bus who challenged me to read huge books so he had someone to talk to about them), and we even competed in spelling (an area I wasn’t so good in). Overall I loved it.

However, the next year things returned to normal. I wasn’t challenged and while I was much better in school then I had been, I hated it. I went when I had to and aimed for staying home whenever I could. Something that would prevail throughout the rest of my schooling.

I was always an avid reader, but I really hated school. Throughout junior high I was shut down when I tried to challenge myself. I wanted to take the SAT’s in eighth grade because I learned that you could. However, that was only available to “gifted” students. I had never taken the “gifted” test which was offered in third grade. The first time I did third grade no one thought of me as gifted and my local elementary only offered it to a select few students. The second time the test was given to my entire class (a good number of people who passed it), but I wasn’t yet a student because I entered school late. (We lived in Detroit during one of the strikes and then moved north where I started school). So, I wasn’t allowed to take the SAT’s. I wanted to join the ninth grade honors program, but that too was only offered to “gifted” students.

By the end of junior high I was learning more on my own than in school…so I searched for something better. The Internet had the answer. Homeschool! I firmly believed that I could teach myself more than my school was teaching me. I also thought that with the right materials I could do it in a lot less time, a lot more fun, and I could do other things rather than school for seven hours a day. I wanted it so badly…

To Be Continued.

The Karth Family Newsletter

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

Each year the Karth’s put together a family newsletter. When it comes out has changed a bit from year to year depending on a lot of different things. There are a lot of different things that go into the family newsletter.

The first goes over what everyone has been up to in the last year, in a super small amount of course. With so many in the family it could take pages to tell all the details. But it gives you enough to feel connected.

Then there are stories that share something about the family and what they have been up to.

Plus there are contributions made by others. These can be really great and often include stories, additional information, and poems.

The newsletter goes out to hundreds around the nation and many look forward to it each year.

Well…hard work is being put into this year’s Family Newsletter. It is sounding like it will be longer than ever and that pages upon pages will be sent out. I haven’t quite figured out what I will be writing for it….need to make it something really exciting.

I may be able to nab a few things for those of you who aren’t on the mailing list. For those who are anxiously awaiting your copy, it is coming! I promise.

Illness

Monday, December 28th, 2009

While I can’t be certain that the facts that I have are true, I will do my best to relay some information to you. Sometime between Christmas morning around 3 am and yesterday illness ravaged the Karth household. Six of Nine Karths became ill. Thankfully this form of stomach flu isn’t a killer and all have managed to survive. Amazingly Mom also managed to survive as caretaker. Those that didn’t get ill include Rebekah who resently had her wisdom teeth removed in a painful surgery (on December 23rd) and Susanna who has been battling a cold. Apparently people are on the path to recovery because the current plan is that Vanessa and Marcus will be visiting for their usual play day tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully someone will be available to add posts to this site (other than just me) in the near future!

It’s Been Awhile

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

It has been awhile since we posted. Christmas alone would be a good excuse, but when you add illnesses and long weeks to the list it becomes more than understandable. Somehow I missed the Christmas countdown and thought (up till last Sunday) that I had one more week before Christmas. This caused our family some issues because we weren’t ready. I had to finish making a gift, we had to buy a gift, and nothing was wrapped.

We had thought we were going to make a goose and found out that the only goose in the area was a $45.00 bird (for a amazing 10 pounds). So, instead I made Southern macarroni and cheese for everyone and the world’s most incredible fudge. It was a good thing cause illness racked the week.

First Marcus was sick, then Peter. I ended up with a cold. Come Christmas morning we found out that Caleb was sick and sadly before the day was over the flu had taken another victim in Mary. I still feel ill from the cold, but we are not sure that the rest of the family is alive. We will call later to find out.

Even with all of this, I am very thankful for our Christmas. The food was great, the presents were wonderful, and having a family to spend the season with even better. Hope yours was also a great Christmas (and minus illness).

Life and Funny Tales

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

First, it is Thursday and I was going to give you Texas snow pictures taken in the middle of the night on Monday. Illness made it so that never happened and then I couldn’t get them off of my camera. I need an in house tech man…I have one, but he has to go to work. Top that off with him being sick and no one is doing all that well these days. After almost two weeks of being sick, I am looking forward to feeling loads better. I felt good on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Peter felt ill on Sunday and everything went down hill from there. The part that makes me feel the worse is poor little Marcus’ cough. He sounds terrible.

Anyway. Such as life and we will see if we can get those snow pictures up before Christmas! :-P

The Funny Tales. Be warned, some may find this very disterbing.

Simply put, we have a pair of rats. They were purchased at PetSmart and aren’t the pesky sort that you don’t want in your house. Instead, they enjoy playing, love it when we clean their cage, and even like to be pet. Both are white with tan heads and they are both very friendly. Mishka has been an escape artist in the past and even came to visit us in our room one night (it seems that if you have a rat that gets out at night they love coming to visit you in your room). Anyway…Marcus loves the rat and spends a lot of time talking with them, playing with them through their cage, and such.

This morning seemed like no other. It was still dark in here. He was really excited and kept saying, “Rat, Rat, Rat!” Since he is also one with a good imagination, so when he started “chasing” the rat around the room I figured he was just imagining it. Well…he ended up on the floor crouched down. He was in such a position that it seemed he might really have caught a rat. When I came over, he was holding Mishka. he was super excited that he had caught a rat.

This is quickly becoming one of those, you had to be there stories. I see it now. I am laughing inside at the image of the small three year old boy crouched over his prize catch. Everyone else is going, “um, okay”.

Well, have a great day or night. Enjoy life and remember family and friends.

It Snowed!

Friday, December 4th, 2009

I know the Caleb and Levi have been hoping for a little of the white stuff and making it sound like it just won’t happen. However, I got up in the middle of the night (truth be told Vanessa got up to eat and I went to the bathroom) and found that the ground was covered with a light sprinkling of snow. It has been pretty cold the last few days and yesterday hovered around freezing, so it is possible that it will stay around for a day or two. However, as crazy as I am, I took pictures tonight just in case it is gone in the morning!

We have been in Texas two and a half years now and have seen it snow once. Our first Thanksgiving, back in 2007 it snowed. We woke up with several inches (in Texas terms). It was enough that Mom rolled snow around their front yard to make a small snow man. By the end of the day the only snow left was her snow man (with leaves sticking out of him). He lasted a couple of days if I remember correctly.

That Christmas was warm. One of those only need a light coat because of the breeze kinda days or maybe a sweatshirt. We all walked down to the football feild to throw a ball around. It was definitely a change from the Michigan winters we had come from. I personally like it though Caleb misses the snow. I enjoy warm and comfortable winters. On the other hand, I really don’t like the hot hot summers. I have talked about a desire to be a snow bird (one who flies south for the winter. I would live in Michigan most of the year, leave in the fall just after the colors had turned or maybe just after the first few snows, and come back in spring, long after the crocuses had bloomed.

You may be able to tell that it is 3:30 in the morning. I seem to be getting a little sleepy eyed and very sleepy brained and waxing just a bit poetic onĀ  you. I am off to bed, but will try to post pics on Monday.

May you have a wonderful weekend!

The Real Meaning of Christmas

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

The Christmas season is upon us. The stores are full of stuff to buy from gift to decorations and so on. People are everywhere loading up on stuff and statistics show that many of them are going into credit card debt in order to buy their families gifts. With all of this hustle and bustle of the season the real meaning of Christmas is easy to forget and leave behind.

This year I had high hopes of lots of gifts for Peter and the kids. But through some issues, money appears to be much tighter than originally planned and it won’t work out. There will be some gifts, but nothing really exciting. In the end, it’s all okay because expensive and fancy gifts or a number of non-expensive fancy gifts aren’t really necessary for a good Christmas.

The Real Meaning.

Christmas started long ago, at least as a concept. We don’t always tell the story in a way that is real accurate. It is true that Mary and Joseph were traveling to register in the city of David (Bethlehem). Those who come from lands that are wintery in the Christmas season envision snow and cold as Mary and Joseph try and find a place in the inn.

Most know that the inn didn’t work out for them and young Mary and her husband Joseph ended up in the stable for the night and as luck would have it, she went into labor. As a woman who has given birth to two children, I can’t imagine doing it with no one but my husband and in a stable none the less. But Mary did an excellent job and brought Jesus into this world.

What was special about this birth wasn’t its location or even the season it happened in (studies have shown it was probably in August or there abouts if my memory serves me right). It wasn’t that the shepherds came and that the wise men brought expensive gifts. Some believe these things could have taken place as late as two years later. Instead what made it special was the fact that Jesus was born.

Jesus wasn’t an ordinary baby. Sure he needed his mother in the same way other babies do. But Jesus was the Son of God and through him the world would be saved. He was the Lamb of God and his blood and death would be what saved man kind and all those who ask can have His death cover their sins.

So, later on, the Catholic church placed the celebration of Jesus’ birth on a pagan holiday so more people would celebrate. While that has a few things to raise your eyebrow to and many of our common holiday celebrations have some roots in those pagan holidays, what we really need to remember is what we should be thinking about on this holiday season.

It is a time to be thankful for all that God has done for us. It is a time to look at his birth with joy and his upcoming death with a full heart. At this time it is important that we not loose focus on the reason for the holiday. Sure getting gifts can be nice, but we have been given the best gift of all time. The birth of Jesus, the Savior of the world, is the best gift possible.

While going through the hustle and bustle of the season, don’t forget that the reason for the season is Jesus!
